Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
A stool-based inflammation marker package that assesses intestinal permeability and mucosal immune activity by measuring faecal zonulin and secretory IgA, helping support evaluation of gut barrier integrity, immune response, and gastrointestinal health.
This package provides a combined assessment of gut permeability and mucosal immune function by measuring zonulin and secretory IgA in stool (faeces). Zonulin is involved in the regulation of intestinal tight junctions, and increased levels are associated with increased intestinal permeability, commonly referred to as “leaky gut”. Secretory IgA is the primary immunoglobulin found in mucosal secretions, including stool, and supports intestinal immune defence and barrier function.
The test may be useful for evaluating immunological activity in the gastrointestinal tract, monitoring intestinal infections or gut inflammation, and tracking treatment progress in inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Elevated secretory IgA may suggest an active mucosal immune response, while decreased levels may indicate reduced mucosal immunity, response to treatment, or worsening barrier-related status. Results should be interpreted together with symptoms, medical history, and other relevant investigations.
