Coeliac Disease HLA Testing

Coeliac Disease HLA Testing

Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

A genetic test that identifies the main HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 risk types associated with coeliac disease, helping assess genetic predisposition and supporting its exclusion when these risk types are absent.

Full Description

Coeliac disease is an immune-mediated condition triggered by gluten in genetically predisposed individuals. This test assesses the main human leukocyte antigen (HLA) risk types associated with coeliac disease, particularly HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8.

The absence of HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8 makes coeliac disease unlikely and can help effectively rule it out with 99% certainty. A positive result indicates genetic predisposition but does not, by itself, confirm a diagnosis. Positive findings should therefore be discussed with a healthcare professional and considered together with clinical and laboratory information.

Testing is performed using the VIASURE HLA Celiac Real-Time PCR Detection Kit for diagnostic detection of the main HLA alleles associated with coeliac disease.

The Process: from purchase to results

  1. Order your test – The kit is delivered to your door. Once you purchase your test kit, you will receive an email with a link to the Customer Guide. You will need to log in (using the credentials you created upon purchasing the kit), to access the Customer guide.
  2. Fill in the form – Submit the online consent form and medical history questionnaire.
  3. Collect your samples – Follow the step-by-step instructions for buccal swab collection.
  4. Send it back – Return your sample using the mailing bag with prepaid return shipping label.
  5. Receive your report – Get your HLA test results within 5 working days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I get this test?
This test may help determine whether you carry the main HLA risk types associated with coeliac disease. It can be particularly useful when a healthcare professional is assessing whether coeliac disease is unlikely or whether further clinical evaluation may be appropriate.
How do I prepare for sample collection?
Do not smoke, eat, drink anything except water, brush your teeth, or chew gum for at least 30 minutes before collecting your buccal swab sample. Collect the sample immediately after opening the swab package and follow the labelling, collection, and return instructions provided with the kit.
How do I interpret the results?
A negative result means that the HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 risk types were not detected, and coeliac disease is effectively ruled out for 99% of such cases. A positive result indicates that an HLA-DQ2 and/or HLA-DQ8 risk type was detected. This shows genetic predisposition but does not confirm that you have, or will develop, coeliac disease. Discuss the result with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
What does IVD mean?
In vitro diagnostics (IVD) tests are medical diagnostic tests that are used for the diagnosis, monitoring, or treatment of diseases or medical conditions in humans. In contrast to other, research use only (RUO) tests, IVD tests are regulated by governmental agencies and are required to meet certain performance standards before they can be marketed and sold to the public. This is an IVD test.
